I'm a teacher and one of my 6th graders is reading Johnny the homocidal maniac comic book. I haven't actually gotten ahold of a copy.
Do you think it's too twisted for 12 year olds? She listens to Marilyn Manson. Is the comic more or less twisted than MM?
Recommendations? Or am I showing my age & being paranoid?

Re: for 12 year olds?
Sat, May 21, 2005 - 7:01 PMIs it more twisted than the music? Well, that's all subjective to how you define "twisted." Yes, it's a bit violent...okay, it's gratuitously violent and intended to be a humorous take on the little demons that can live in the heads of people and is an escape to enjoy these types of things without actually going and doing them...something JV litters little messages about throughout many of the strips.
If you're looking from the outside, yeah it's probably a lot more twisted than anything MM does (last time I checked he just runs around in women's clothing, paints his face, and screams about whatever things he sees and takes issue with.)
If you have a strong stomach, I'd suggest borrowing some of the strips from your student. You can get a good laugh out of it and evaluate how much healthier it is to escape from reality when dealing with thoughts like that rather than actually going and doing them. Rather than freaking out at the subject matter, perhaps you can sit with the student and have a mature conversation making sure she does in fact understand the message that it's not okay to run off and do these kinds of things, but it sure is a lot of fun to draw strips of them happening, or read the finished product to entertain those moments when you really would just love to saw a cheerleader's legs off. *grin*
Really, just treat her like she's mature, and listen to her point of view. That's the healthiest reaction you can really have to it. -

Re: for 12 year olds?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 8:16 PMI agree, thumb through a copy and see what you think. I remember a teacher taking issue with some of the poetry I was reading in Junior High (the assumption was that I was too young to be reading material of a slightly lurid nature) and rather than asking why I was reading it or what my thoughts were the teacher said I should cease immediately. Had the teacher asked, she would have learned that I was going through some dark times and felt less isolated reading poetry about feelings and situations I could relate to. So, the worst thing an adult can do is pass judgement on a kid before educating themselves fully of the situation. If you still have misgivings about its appropriateness for her reading after looking at an issue then I would just be casual and ask her about it. Personally, JTHM seems tame compared to what I'm sure the majority of 6th graders are reading/watching right now. It was Southpark and Beavis & Butthead that was popular with most when I was in 6th grade and that stuff still makes me blush at age 20.
Cheers!

Re: for 12 year olds?
Sun, May 22, 2005 - 4:15 PMI know a very intellagent 12 year old who loves Jonny. I don't thnk she likes marlyn mason. She Knows the difference between reality and what she reads. I think in both cases, it would depend on the child's parents, if they find it approprite. Also what is the childs personality? Are they very imperishable? -

Re: for 12 year olds?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 7:23 PMI've read JTHM and I've honestly been more offended watching the evening news. Most 12 year olds can tell the difference between reality and elaborate stories of imagination. If you ask me reality is worse. -

Re: for 12 year olds?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 8:32 PMI just decided I'll let my 12 year old brother borrow my copies. Get his honest input. He's a bright kid, so this will be fun.

Re: for 12 year olds?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 10:33 PMif a kid is ready for this kind of material, they'll find it. I'm pretty sure the finer points would be lost on someone that young though. For example: Johnen likes to make fun of late eighties to early ninties Goths. Will a kid who wasn't alive then get these jokes? probably not. other than that, its about isolation, senseless killing, monomainia, and toilet humor. Its crude in the sense that it includes adult ideas and cynicism.
It would take a truely mature 12 year old to get this material. -

Re: for 12 year olds?
Wed, May 25, 2005 - 10:58 AMI remember my friends and I were reading Stephen King novels when we were in the 5th grade. I am sure JTHM is no worse than King's novels. -
